Harry and a Harrowing Treat, Afterward!

Yes!  This was an evening at the theater for which we had been waiting!  The first film of the final chapter of the Harry Potter series opened this week.  As usual, we made Friday night our time for movie watching!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part One begins with showing the three young magicians as blossoming post-teens.  Hermoine (Emma Watson), Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), and Ron (Rupert Grint) have left Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, in search of the Horcruxes.  These are the magical items that are providing the devious Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) with his power source, and destroying them means destroying him!

The friends have found refuge at the ample home of the Weasley family.  Leaders from The Order of the Phoenix get there to inform Harry, Hermoine, the Weasleys, and friends that are with them about how they can proceed with possible success.  Six of the friends choose to take a magic potion that turns them into identical copies of Harry, giving him protection from the ruthless Death Eaters.

They all leave the Weasley home, as Harry is safe with Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane).  Yet, as they begin further searches, Death Eaters appear!  Lord Voldemort is there, yet the use of Harry’s magic wand allows them to defeat the dark lord.  The group continues, except for Harry, who was asked to remain behind for a wedding of George (Oliver Phelps), who is one of the Weasley twins, to Fleur Delacour (Clémence Poésy) , one of the champion sorceresses from a neighboring magic school.

The friends reconnect at a location where The Minister of Magic reads the last will and testament of prior Headmaster Albus Dumbledore.  Each of them receives an item of special purpose, with Harry getting the lost Sword of Gryffindor. It is during the festivities that all of them learn that Hogwarts has been taken over!  The Ministry of Magic has seized control of Hogwarts.  Professor Minerva Macgonogall (Dame Maggie Smith) is now Headmistress, yet her power is bound by The Ministry.

Harry, Hermoine, and Ron have to flee to London, evading Death Eaters.  They end up battling one at a London cafe, winning, then going to meet with Regulus Black (Tom Moorcroft).  He is the younger brother of  the murdered wizard Sirius, and the person with whom Harry was instructed to meet at the end of the last chapter.  Regulus is one of Voldemort’s Death Eaters, also!

Harry gets further information from the hideous, and slightly friendly troll, Kreacher, about a magical locket that is needed in their fight.  He has Kreacher to go after the locket, yet Kreacher (voice of Simon McBurney) reveals that the new and self-proclaimed headmistress of Hogwarts, Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton), has it.  The friends choose to go to the school to steal it back from her!

Upon reaching Hogwarts, they use magic to appear as three ministers.  They are forced to separate, pretending to be these people, while interacting with enemies within the school.  Only Harry is alone, reaching Umbridge’s office to search for clues, then joined by Ron.  Umbridge arrives, yet so does Hermoine, and a magical battle erupts.  Their cover is blown, so they leave to a hidden forest location.

Ron is hurt while they travel.  Harry and Hermoine watch over him, while trying to destroy this magical locket.  They are not able to do so, and their attempts cause the locket to transfer some of it’s negative energy onto them. Yet, Harry gets a vision of Lord Voldemort while wearing his locket.

The group spreads apart into the rural area near the Weasley’s home.  Ron has the locket with him, and it causes him to mistrust Harry and Hermoine.  As he likes/dates Hermoine, Ron begins to have falsely based thoughts of mistrust about his best friend Harry and his girlfriend, Hermoine.  Ron’s actions of envy cause the others to leave him behind, as they have to proceed after the sword without his jealous interference.

Harry and Hermoine get to Godric’s Hollow, where they meet Bathilda Bagshot (Hazel Douglas).  She gives them details that lead them to a graveyard where they find details matching symbols on the necklace of Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch), and in a book given to Harry from Professor Dumbledore.  A mysterious, elderly lady appears, who Harry believes to be someone named Bagshot.  They follow her to her home, where she is revealed to be the humongous snake of Lord Voldemort!  Harry and Hermoine get away, yet Harry loses his wand!

They have to hide overnight in a forest.  A deer guards them, and Harry follows it to a frozen lake.  He sees a sword at the bottom, and he dives into the lake (it is frigid…) to get hold of it.  The magic locket that Harry has begins to display magical powers, causing Harry nearly to be drowned.  Ron is able to rescue Harry, and he destroys the remaining Horcrux.Hermoine uses her increasing powers of sorcery to transform Harry into a facially disfigured person.  She briefly has to deal with Ron being jealous of her time spent with Harry, as Ron is angry after having seen a ghost which told him that his mother would have preferred to have Harry as her son!

Ron destroys te magical locket, as the group deals with a minor situation of discomfort regarding personal details revealed.  They proceed to the home of Luna Lovegood, where her father informs them about The Deathly Hallows.  These are a magical wand, a stone of resurrection, and an invisibility cloak.  They mean to get hold of these items, but Luna Lovegood’s father arrives to tell them that Luna has been taken by Death Eaters!  Mr. Lovegood has to hold the friends as hostages if he wants to see his daughter alive.

The friends manage to get away.  As they get to a presumed safe area, people are waiting to trap them, and to take them back to the Ministry of Magic.  They see Harry’s scar through the transformation of his face, and the friends are taken to the Malfoy home to receive a prize for capturing Harry!

They are at the Malfoy home, yet none of the wicked sorcerers can tell whether or not the disfigured person really is Harry.  Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter) recognizes the Sword of Gryffindor with the group, leading her to imprison Harry and Ron, and to torture Hermoine.

The troll Dobby is called by Harry, who frees them and Luna Lovegood.  They all return to save Hermoine, but Dobby is killed by Bellatrix when they try to escape.  The group gets away, mourning and burying Dobby.  Part One ends with a reappearance of Lord Voldemort, who has entered the tomb of Professor Dumbledore, taking his wand!

Movie goers never get enough!  We got into The Next Three Days, next!  Russell Crowe stars as John Brennan, a successful and happily married man.  Yet, his life is turned upside down when his wife Lara (Elizabeth Banks) is convicte and jailed for a murder that she claims she did not commit.

John progresses through three years of his life, desperately searching for evidence to clear his wife.  He is devoted to finding this information, all while remaining a strong and dedicated father to the couple’s son.  John does get to a point where he believes that he can use legal resources to prove his wife’s innocence, freeing her.

It is after Lara’s last appeal is rejected by legal officials that John nearly gives up hope.  Now desperate, he sends their son to live with Lara’s parents.  John sees that his wife now is depressed and suicidal, so he opts to concoct a plan to break her out of jail.    Trial and much error do pay off, as John is able to free Lara after much trial, and nearly being caught, himself!

I got to see a trailer for X-Men:  First Class, and it looked exciting!  It is going to go back to when Professor Xavier first started his school, and how the mutants first united for training to become the famous team of superheroes!  As well, the movie for Green Lantern looks good, as it will focus not only on the character from Earth, but Green Lanterns from across the universe will be shown!  His arch-nemesis, Sinestro, will be the lead villian!  The Transformers will be back in part three:  Dark  of the Moon, and Batman returns for the next sequel, The Dark Knight Rises!
