A Galaxy’s Central Black Hole Beams Busting Loose!

August 31, 2011 at 6:56 PM (astronomy topics, curious research, current news, extraterrestrial studies, late night studies, science and technology)

The final frontier is very exciting!  There are astronomers, physicists, and various levels of scientists whom regularly study what is happening out there.  Right now, some of these researchers are reviewing received data regarding what appears to be a celestial phenomenon!

A galaxy that is officially entitled NGC 3393 has been dubbed S.P.E.C.A. (Spiral-host Episodic radio galaxy tracing Cluster Accretion).  It is located roughly 160 million light years away from Earth, and relatively near to The Milky Way, as far as distances of outer space are concerned.  It is a spiral galaxy, similar to our home.  Yet, S.P.E.C.A. is practically unique because it is only one of two known spiral galaxies with core jet ejections.  The other is NGC 6240, called The Starfish Galaxy, which is seen through the constellation Ophiuchus, and is situated 330 million light years away!

Particle jets spew from the central region of S.P.E.C.A..  A supermassive black hole at it’s galactic core is where immense streams of particles erupt and burst into space.  These beams are called active particle jets, or relativistic jets.  This is said to be an unusual action seen within studied spiral galaxies.  Scientists normally have found this kind of activity within elliptical galaxies.

Researchers with Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics have been the primary participants in the studies of this phenomenon.  This facility is located in Taiwan, where regular studies of the wonders of the universe occur.  Their studies have taken information acquired through The Chandra X-ray Observatory.  One scientist at this research station labeled S.P.E.C.A. as “the most exotic galaxy with a black hole ever seen”!

Somethin’ Strange Coming BACK to The Neighborhood!

August 28, 2011 at 11:23 PM (curious research, current news, late night studies, movie reviews, web gossip)

I ain’t afraid of no ghost!  It is official!  There will be a Ghostbusters 3 coming to theaters, soon!  Exciting!

The Ghostbusters films of the 1980’s were highly humorous and easily enjoyable.  Well, the first film likely was better than the second one, yet both of them were crowd pleasers.  I even recall enjoying the cartoon series that accompanied the movies!

Ghostbusters I premiered during 1984.  Dan Akroyd, Rick Moranis, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Sigourney Weaver were the leads within this highly entertaining and profitable, blockbuster film.  I read that the movie grossed over $240 million in The U.S., and more than fifty million abroad!  Highly entertaining and highly profitable!

Ghostbusters II was successful also, having the largest weekend opening at that time (it was defeated a week later by Batman).  It premiered during 1989, featuring the same lead men as The Ghostbusters, and most of the original cast.  Both the original and part two went on to produce a funny cartoon series, a comic book series, and even a line of toys!

Now, I am getting initial reports about Ghostbusters 3, which should be released during 2013.  The filming for it will begin during Spring 2012, so a year later should be enough time for all of the movie’s aspects to be wrapped and ready for presentation.  I understand that Dan Akroyd is directing, and he is starring in the film.  There is controversy about whether or not Bill Murray will return, but they are saying that the movie will go on with or with out him!  Well!

I am hearing that it is going to be a type of generation-change thing; old Ghostbusters to new Ghostbusters.  The original members will be passing the torch to a new series of spectral silencers.  I am reading various memos that Ass N’ Coocher (Ashton Kutcher) will be a part of the new crew!  Fans should look forward to the release during Spring 2013!

Star Go Boom!

August 26, 2011 at 8:57 PM (astronomy topics, curious research, current news, extraterrestrial studies, late night studies, science and technology)

The fantastic event of a supernova has occurred, recently!  Albeit twenty-one million light years away, astronomers were able to view this rare celestial event from Earth.  The event is being studied to gain any details that are available.

The star labeled as PTF 11kly was located within The Pinwheel Galaxy.  This is located between twenty-one million and twenty-five million light years from us.  Scientific labelings for this galaxy include Messier 101 and NGC 5457.  It is a spiral galaxy, nearly similar to our Milky Way.  Astronomer Pierre Méchain discovered it during 1781.

This explosion is a Type 1a supernova.  PTF 11kly was a white dwarf, a star that is roughly the size of our planet.  However, it’s gravitational pull equals that of a yellow dwarf, a G-type main-sequence star, like our Sun.  This star finally reached an excessive weight limit to where it could not sustain itself anymore.  It’s mass caused it to collapse inward, then it exploded!

It will have no actual effect on us, as it is so far away.  Yet, it will be visible telescopically, as it virtually is near, in relation to distances of spacetime.  This closeness allows astronomers to view PTF 11kly from the time that the explosion actually occurred.  Most stars that have gone supernova have been to distant to study from the instant moments of their explosions!

This supernova was discovered at The Palomar Transient Factory.  Here, the telescopes are designed to observe moving and changing objects within outer space.  It’s goals are to view various stars, supernovae, extrasolar planets, and other varied celestial phenomena.  Other scientific sites proceeded to view this event, including The Hubble Space Telescope.

Don’t Do That! I’ll Hot Sauce You!

August 24, 2011 at 6:06 PM (childcare and child protection, curious research, current news, social opinion)

It usually is not supposed to be anyone else’s business how a parent or sets of parents discpline their own children.  It usually is not anyone else’s business until it reaches the point of line-crossing, and the children are in danger.  Of course, danger in this instance can be defined broadly, which is why it has been taken to court!

Hopping back up to Alaska; here is one woman whom faces criminal charges for the possible abuse of her son.  Jessica Beagley, aged 36, is facing criminal charges for how she has disciplined her son.  She was on trial in Anchorage, and is currently free without bail.

Beagley has been arrested and indicted because of the manner in which she punished her son.  She and her husband have a set of ten-year-old boys whom they adopted from Russia.  One of the boys has a recorded history of being emotionally disturbed, with documentation of emotional and psychological issues.  He has done things that include frequent lying and peeing on the floor.  It seems that The Beagleys were aware of this boy’s disturbed nature before adopting him and his twin during 2008.

This situation with the young twin received greater attention when The Beagleys sent recordings of their discipline efforts to The Dr. Phil Show.  Jessica Beagley personally taped the incidents with her unruly son.  Her intention was to try getting assistance for dealing with a disturbed child.  It was the public viewing of these tapes from a segment of Dr. Phil’s program called Mommy Confessions that had the issue taken for legal review.  The tapes showed Beagley having her adopted son to ingest hot sauce, while he cried, then not allowing him to spit it out for eight minutes.  Also, the tapes have recordings of Beagley forcing the boy to take cold showers before bedtime as forms of punishment.

These are methods of child rearing and discipline that supposedly are religiously-endorsed.  It seems that conservative Christians, and some others, refer to one particular form of child punishment as hot saucing.  This is where the parent has the child to stick out his or her tounge, then hot sauce is dropped onto it as a manner of punishment.

Beagley is to return to court this coming Monday, August 29.  She could receive up to one year of incarceration, a $10,000 fine, and ten succeeding years of probation.  District Judge David Wallace is presiding over this case.  As several whom have seen her actions have described them as abusive, harsh, and outright-rude, it will be up to this Alaskan jury to decide how she will be punished for these incidences.  Beagley herself has said that she is a part of a loving family.  The original airings on Dr. Phil occurred during November  2010, where he described Beagley’s actions as brutal and offensive!

New Swathmore College Telescope Adds to Searches of Space!

August 23, 2011 at 12:58 AM (astronomy topics, curious research, current news, late night studies, science and technology)

We do know that planets exist beyond what we identify as our solar system.  Astronomers have been searching for extrasolar planets since the mid-twentieth century.  It was during the end of the 1960s when astronomer Peter van de Kamp came to the astonishing conclusion that two planets may exist beyond the then-nine that we recognized!

This scientist who hailed from Denmark was a professional scientist and astronomy professor for over thirty-five years.  Van de Kamp’s fervor for the studies of outer space was found in his understandings of the motions of stars.  He even had a highlight moment during the decade of the 60’s when he publicized an alleged finding of another solar system.

Van de Kamp believed that he had located another system of planets orbiting Barnard’s Star.  This possible solar system is in the area of the Ptolemaic constellation Ophiuchus, which hosts sixty-two counted stars.  Seven of these stars have planets, one of which has been suspected to be Barnard’s Star.  This star is roughly six light years away from our Sun.  It is a red dwarf, not visible from Earth without telescopic assistance.

Van de Kamp worked at The Swarthmore College Sproul Observatory at Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.  This was constructed in 1906, funded by collegiate supporter, Pennsylvania Governor William Sproul.  The observatory houses a twenty-four inch-wide refractor telescope.  This telescope is the first instrument used to capture images of Pluto.

As of now, there are what are being labeled as 573 candidates for planets existing beyond the realm of our solar system.  These extrasolar planets, at present, seem mainly to be gas giants, with some being studied more intensely to learn whether or not they are terrestrial planets.  The world labeled as Gliese 581 d currently is the closest thing that we are understanding to be a world possibly similar to our Earth, while existing beyond our solar system.

The current work of a graduate student from Harvard-Smithsonian Center For Astrophysics has revealed what could be the latest Super-Earth.  As I have heard/read before, these distant worlds supposedly are versions of our Earth, yet on steroids!  They are massive worlds, like Earth, but they are far larger than our home.  Yet, they are not as enormous as gas giant worlds.  Most importantly, nothing has been identified on these worlds that would directly link them with Earth (no dirt, no water, no people……).

Barnard’s Star has been identified as being an elderly star.  It is nearly twelve billion years old, and it rotates slowly!  As a red dwarf, it is smaller than The Sun, and slightly larger than Jupiter.  The worlds that Van der Kamp had located were questioned by astronomers as to whether or not they actually are there!

It was during the 1960s when two Jupiter-sized worlds were suspected to be in orbit of Barnard’s Star.  Van der Kamp suspected that he saw the star wobbling, indicating that it was being pulled by the gravitational forces of orbiting worlds.  His studies went on to produce the possibilities of two planets, Super Earths that are at most 0.7 times more massive than Earth, orbiting this star.  However, studies between 2005 and 2007 are revealing evidence of no planets at this location.

The star that seems to get the most attention for possibly having habitable worlds is Gliese 581.  Located roughly twenty light years away, and within the constellation Libra, Gliese 581 could have six worlds in orbit around it!  One of which is Gliese 581g, which could be within this star’s habitable zone, along with possibly habitable neighbors Gliese 581c and Gliese 581d.  Yet, scientists believe that 581c may have endured a greenhouse effect, rendering the world incapable of supporting what we recognize as life!

The search continues!  Swathmore College currently has dedicated it’s new Peter Van der Kamp Telescope, to assist in the search for worlds and more that exist beyond our Earth.  As well, N.A.S.A. continues running Planet Quest, which peruses the skies for alien worlds that may host life.  Additionally, The Kepler Mission continues it’s voyage, as it was launched in 2009, and it has identified roughly 140 worlds with some similarities to our Earth!

Early America with Alien Adventurers?

August 19, 2011 at 12:12 AM (astronomy topics, curious research, extraterrestrial studies, late night studies, science and technology, Uncategorized)

Extraterrestrial enthusiasts continue with the suggestions that Earth has been visited by beings from other worlds several times during her past.  I found myself curiously pleased by the particular presentations surrounding the possibilities of our planet having been briefly probed by other-worldly explorers.  This particular episode goes to speculate that evidence of their having been on our world is all around us!

These episodes of Ancient Aliens explore the idea of ancient extraterrestrials having been on Earth, and that they left traces of their visitations in plain sight!  Around the world, certain areas contain spectacular structures that ancient civilizations allegedly created to display forms of honor and worship to their deities.  So many of these creations are so enormous and so fantastic that many modern people have wondered how ancient humans could have created them without the use of modern technological advances.  This particular chapter of Ancient Aliens ventures to say that our ancestors had the assistance and the guidance of extraterrestial beings with the makings of these monuments.

Some alleged evidence comes from ancient documentation of flying objects.  Lands that supported human civilization before the age of technology have evidence of primitive humanity having kept records of strange sights that were described as giant, metallic birds!  People from cultures that included Chinese, Egyptian, and Roman have these written images in their historic documentations, as well as ancient cultures from the western hemisphere.

Specifically within North America, as the home of The Hopi, records of alien encounters have been displayed through their petroglyphs.  These carvings from rock formations depict images of interactions between people and what seem to be beings of strange construction.  Closer examination of the images do seem to display that people were interacting with beings that were holding devices and wearing helmets!  Ancestral legends of the Hopi seem to tell of their people having interacted with space travellers whom they came to view as gods!

Adams County, Ohio is where Serpent Mound is found.  This is a 1,370 feet-long, and up to three-feet-long mound that has the sketching of a giant snake.  The image itself coils for over eight-hundred feet, displaying seven curlings, and a thrice-wound tail.  The snake has a widely-opened mouth that seems to be consuming something.  Researchers have described the eaten object as anything from an egg, to a frog, to The Sun!  It is thought that The Adena of the Ohio Valley region created this mound, and that it’s purpose was to serve as a land marker for aerial vessels!

Elizabeth Lake, California is where Native American cultures have stories of a phoenix-like bird emerging from the water.  It appeared to come and go into the skies, suggesting that trips were being made to and from the planet!  The natives referred to it as a Thunderbird, a creature of extraordinary power, likely a servant to the gods!  E.T. theorists suggest that the natives were seeing an extraterrestrial vessel making back and forth voyages.

Also, there were reports from some cowboys and ranchers during the late nineteenth century, in this same area.  This section of California is in Los Angeles County, and contains a lake that is situated directly above San Andreas Fault.  Tales from the mid-nineteenth century describe an enormous, winged creature emerging from the lake at night.  It moved rapidly, seemed to be metallic, and it was resistant to bullets, suggesting a metallic structure!

Keep A Cherished Icon; Change A Chiding Symbol?

August 15, 2011 at 5:14 PM (curious research, current news, social opinion)

I realize that it is somewhat of a thin, gray line.  Yet, I do feel that, when it comes down to the facts of the matter, the ultimate effects and depths of purpose need to be taken into account.  It should be considered, then understood, as to whether or not the actual legitimacy of the image outweighs the public clamor.

The University of North Dakota has been under recent political and public assault.  The school is enduring public hammering because of it’s continued use of a controversial mascot.  The school’s students, competitors, and all of whom have been involved currently hold onto their likely cherished mascot of The Fighting Sioux.  UND has held this mascot for it’s athletics programs since some time after 1930.  It adopted the moniker “Sioux” during that year, and “Fighting” was included some time later.

The school is now facing a deadline to change it’s mascot.  The National Collegiate Athletic Association has ordered the campus to recognize it’s current policy for campuses with mascots that may be viewed as “hostile or offensive to Native Americans”.  UND is supposed to retire the nickname Fighting Sioux by today.

Controversy surrounding the seemingly done-deal of changing the school mascot has come from The State of North Dakota.  State legislators had been dealing with the issue since 2007.  This is when The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education made a final decision to withdraw the use of the mascot by August 15, 2011 to comply with NCAA administrative legislation to alter school mascots that currently are of Native American depiction.

The University of North Dakota will face strengthened sanctions if it does not change it’s mascot.  School officials met with NCAA directors last Friday, agreeing to stop the use of the name Fighting Sioux, and all school logos associated with this mascot.  However, North Dakota legislators signed a bill into law that ordered the school not to comply with NCAA rules, lead by Governor Jack Dalrymple.

The greater level of importance seems to come from The University of North Dakota’s ascension into The Big Sky Conference.  As a member of this greater athletic community, UND will receive greater academic, financial, and political attention.  UND will elevate to Division I from it’s current Division II status.

UND is facing aggression over it’s mascot because of growing, nationwide controversy over school nicknames that are being viewed as racially and/or socially offensive.  It is being nudged to alter it’s label of a Native American image, in accordance with other schools.  Campuses that include Stanford University and St. John’s University held prior mascot names that were politically offensive, and they have since changed them.

The University of North Dakota has made prior efforts to change it’s school mascot.  It was during 2000 when it tried to adopt a new nickname, yet it was stopped by a financially-powerful alumnus who intimidated the school by saying he would not give a $100 million donation if the mascot was changed.  UND still has not adhered to the 2005 NCAA order for affiliated campuses to change ethnically offensive mascots, whereas several other schools already have chosen new mascots to remove prior ones that were viewed as offensive.

It WILL Work!!!

August 13, 2011 at 7:43 PM (astronomy topics, curious research, current news, late night studies, science and technology)

Zoom!!!  Technologists working with The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and The United States Department of Defense have succeeded with the creation of what likely is the world’s fastest aircraft!  However, it has been lost!

U.S. military agents set up an initial test of the hyperjet called The Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle; HTV-2.  This super-technical aircraft is supposedly capable of reaching acceleration rates that are twenty times the speed of sound.  This is equivalent to 13,000 miles per hour!

Where a normal flight from Los Angeles to New York City would last for roughly six hours, HTV-2 could make this trip within twelve minutes!  This vehicle was being hailed as the next advance in air travel.  Yet, now, military officials can not find it!  Today, a flight that began at Vandenberg Airforce Base in California had all contacts severed twenty minutes into the trip.

DARPA researchers seemed to have searched for the vessel for forty-five minutes after contact was lost with it.  It was after that time when they made tweets, announcing that HTV-2 was no longer being tracked, and that the ship has the capacity to self-destruct if it loses control.  HTV-2 is supposed to have self-submerged into the ocean after a failed flight.

A prior test of a similar vehicle was a failure, also!  During April 2010, military researchers launched a prior construction of HTV-2.  After nine minutes of flying, contact was lost with the aircraft!

U.S. defense reseachers are in efforts to create airships that can respond to global emergencies within shortened lengths of time.  These aircraft are intended to achieve flying speeds of mach 20, or more.  This would allow the ship to reach and to intercept any missiles or vehicles that are aimed at The United States, eliminating them before they reach their targets.

N.A.S.A. and U.S. Defense Department technologists are finding the efforts to create a terrestrial vehicle, capable of travelling at hyper-accelerated speeds, somewhat difficult.  They are seeing that the composition of the atmosphere is working against vehicles that are attempting to reach additionally-pushed propulsions, with naturally-occurring forces of the planet slowing them down.

The Darkest Planet Yet Discovered!

August 12, 2011 at 5:52 PM (astronomy topics, curious research, current news, extraterrestrial studies)

Good telescopic observations are what I would have to use for attributing the finding of this particular object.  Of course, most of these astronomers are accurate observers, and they are very good with the work that they do.  Yet, I think that it may have taken a bit of extra skill to locate this particular sight!

Astronomers working with Princeton University made this discovery.  Telescopes gazed a distance of some 750 light years to locate TrES-2b.  This gas giant world is located in The Draco Constellation region of The Milky Way.  It is the first planet out from it’s host star, GSC 03549-02811 (no, they did not mean for everyone to get involved….).

TrES-2b is currently outstanding because of it’s non-reflective characteristic.  The planet has been viewed as being very dark, or darker than a black acrylic paint, as it was stated in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.  It is exceptionally opaque, and researchers are not totally sure as to why this is so.  The world reflects a mere one percent of the light from GSC 03549-02811.

TrES-2b is not completely void of illumination.  Apparently, it has a dull red glow about it, which is being described as similar to the lit coils within a stove.  This is due to the heat that the planet emits, likely due to it being a gas giant orbiting on top of it’s host star.  TrES-2b is only 310 million miles from it’s star, GSC 03549-02811, meaning it can reach temperatures that are near to 2,000 degrees, Fahrenheit!

TrES-2b is a gas giant.  It is suspected to be tidally locked, meaning that one side of the planet always faces it’s star.  This is like our Moon, where it’s dark side is never seen from Earth!  The gravitational binding of TrES-2b to GSC 03549-02811 causes the planet to be presented through phases, similar to how our Moon is viewed from Earth!

Rain, Rain, Come Today!

August 11, 2011 at 7:37 PM (climate studies, curious research, current news, social opinion)

Bring the rain, please!  It has NOT rained significantly within The State of Texas for months!  The effects of the lack of precipitation are showing, especially through the appearances of parched land surfaces and sudden wildfires.  Where is the rain?

The currently dehydrated situation within Texas has made a disparagingly significant effect.  As the state is suffering through it’s third-driest recorded period, water sources are drying, farmland is withering, and animals are suffering.  The excessively dry land has the state on alert for the chance of sudden wildfires sparking!

It is being reported that Texas is suffering though it’s worst drought since 1951.  This was the climax period of a six-year-long dry period that took The Lone Star State through arid and desiccated conditions that began in 1949, and ended during 1955.  Yet, some climatic surveyors are saying that Texas still is not as parched as it was during 1956!

The metropolitan area of Houston, Texas has received only 1.5 inches of rain during the past three-month period.  This is a mere fifteen percent of what is supposed to be the normal amount of rainfall.  This measurement is being recorded as less rain that occurs within The Sahara Desert within the same time period!

Texas is not alone in it’s suffering through times without rain.  Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Oklahoma are other states that have had to endure drought conditions.  The National Weather Service has placed red flag warnings for each of these states, meaning that wildfires can erupt at anytime because of the arid land settings.

The conditions of La Niña are being labeled as the culprit for the current drought.  It is being speculated that the coolings of waters within The Pacific Ocean that are along the equatorial region are catalystic to the reduction of weather conditions necessary to produce needed rainfall.  As a mere 0.18 inches of rainfall have occurred within Texas during this drought period, the effects of La Niña are being eyed strongly as the major source behind this dry season.

Some meteorologists are speculating that La Niña is not the reason behind the current drought.  The effects of the weather phenomenon have occurred within the recent past, and have not produced the extremely arid effects that are happening, at this time.  Dr. John Nielsen-Gammon, a climatologist from Texas A&M University has stated that La Niña will produce a fifty-fifty chance of being the cause of extreme drought within Texas.

The state’s drought settings are believed to have begun during June.  Texas’ most recently extreme levels of rain came during Tropical Storm Hermine, which brought heavy rainfall to the state during September 2010.  Since that point, Texas has fallen into it’s second-driest time since 1967.  Any continued absence of precipitation is expected to influence an extremely heavy season of wildfires, exceptionally dehydrated land, and withered vegetation.
