West Rubs At Wounds Yet to Heal!

It is sad, but it is scary, too!  Here, we have an elected official, someone upon whom registered voters have placed their support to see that their community needs are met.  Communities are filled with members of society from several different backgrounds, which include differences in ethnicity, religion, economic standings, and educational levels.  At some point, these differences are meant to find some levels of comfortable mergers as a part of any community’s efforts to create a desireable place to live.  Yet, that level of comfort can not be achieved when there are leaders whom continuously make efforts to highlight differences in seeming attempts to create situations of separation.

Florida Republican Representative Allen West is being highlighted recently because of announcements that he could be picked for the 2012 Republican Vice-Presidential nominee.  The punchline to that statement is that Sarah Palin would select West as her choice for the Republican Presidential running mate!  During an interview with FOX News, Palin told FOX News reporter Sean Hannity that West would be at the top of her list for Vice-Presidential nominee picks.

Representative West serves as The United States Representative of the 22nd Congressional District of Florida.  He was elected to this position during 2011, becoming the first African-American Republican Congressman from Florida since 1876!  West is noted for having devoted over twenty years of service to The United States Army, where he had been deployed for warfare in Iraq, and he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.

During 2011, West got over $1.5 million for his efforts at re-election to Congress.  He became a member of The Congressional Black Caucus that year, being noted as the first Republican of The CBC since the retirement of Congressman Gary Franks.  While serving the government, West has been noted for his condemnation of having a Palestine Liberation Organization flag flying in Washington, D.C..

West has been noted for his adverse comments about Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.  He sent an e-mail, where he described Schultz as “the most vile, unprofessional, and despicable member of The U.S. House of Representatives”, and “not a lady”!  His caustic comments had been traced to statements that West made at a Palm City, Florida town hall meeting, where West declared his beliefs about seventy-eight to eighty-one members of The Democratic Party being actual members of The Communist Party!

West has responded to questioning on his beliefs regarding homosexuals, and homosexuality being a behavioral issue.  He has stated that he does not believe that gays should change their behavior, though he plans to gain the respect of homosexuals.  He opposes gay marriage, but he does support gay civil unions, as well as gay couples’ efforts to adopt children.

As well, West has stated that Islam is “a theocratic political ideology” with which U.S. society needs to come to terms.  This was in response to questioning about West’s alleged statements about Islam being “evil, vile, and not a religion”.  West has made additional comments, which include saying that Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison, as a devout Muslim, “represents the antithesis of the principles upon which this country was established”

Also, West has referred to House Representative Maxine Waters as an “overseer”. This was in conjunction with West’s comments about Waters creating a situation of “a 21st century plantation” with Black voters, as certain African-American leaders have been appointed to be “overseers”, which was a reference to slave enforcers of The U.S. South prior to The Civil War.

It does seem that West has some serious issues with members of U.S. society whom have differences of beliefs and ways from his own.  He has served as a public official, being a member of Congress since 2011.  He likely has not been active long enough for all of his personal views to make into the national spotlight, yet that is likely to change as the 2012 Presidential Election approaches.  West’s active participation with whomever The Republicans select as their Presidential Nominee likely will serve as part of the decision regarding that political party’s 2012 Presidential candidate.
