Are Men Stupid?

Ha-ha……  and I’m a man!   It is possibly funny, possibly strange, that I might have to say yes.  Well, maybe not all of us.  Yet, there certainly is a very large amount that would make the answer to this question an overwhelming yes.

Are men stupid?  I am not sure that is a good way to put it.  I think that it should be kept in mind that most men are operating with two heads.  Often, it is that lower one that dominates control over many situations.  Reason and rational thought often can fly out of the window when junior wants his way!

This all is stemming (ahem…) from examinations of the situation with former Senator John Edwards.  The North Carolinan Democrat is a high-profile U.S. political figure.  He was a candidate for President during 2004 and 2008.  Also, he was the Vice-Presidential candidate with John Kerry with the Democratic Party Presidential Campaign during 2004.

His personal lifestyle and illicit affairs have been brought to public attention due to his high profile political status.  Edwards lied to the U.S. public, regarding his undercover relationship with Rielle Hunter.  These giddy goings-on allegedly occurred during the high points of Edwards’ political career.  He had captured the attention and the respect of many Democratic followers.  He had gained the concern and the thoughts of many U.S. citizens after it was revealed that his wife, Elizabeth, was suffering from a second bout of breast cancer, this time incurable.

It is now that Edwards is facing criminal charges because of illegal financial contributions that he received during his unsuccessful 2004 and 2008 Presidential runs.  During that time, it was likely that Edwards had the support of a Democratic background that wanted to see a candidate with some credibility attempting to gain this party’s Presidential nomination.  Furthermore, Edwards likely had the sympathetic support, after the announcement of his wife, Elizabeth’s, incurable breast cancer.

Edwards currently on trial, facing charges for receiving illegal campaign funds, making false statements while on trial, and for conspiracy.  A conviction could lead Edwards to spend a maximum of thirty years in prison, and to be charged over one million dollars.  Yet, all of this is not the biggest stunner with Edward’s current situation.

The conspiracy trial that is occurring got very personal for Edwards, today.  His daughter, Cate Upham, was publicly stunned during one of the testimonies from a political aide of her father’s.  She heard details about a heated argument that took place between her parents, both of whom were in the presence of one of Edwards’ political aides.  Apparently, the aide heard the conversational conflict, as Mrs. Edwards told her husband that he does not see her anymore, after Mrs. Edwards removed her upper clothing to reveal her bare chest.

It is the fact that John Edwards was engaging in these actions while attempting to run for President, as his wife was suffering extremely!  Trying to put myself in Edwards’ state of mind, perhaps he was looking for consolation during a time of extreme stress.  Certainly, his higher thoughts and senses were weak, and Edwards needed to have the additional companionship dominated his greater levels of sensibility.

Cate Upham broke down crying, after hearing the details of what happened between her father and his mistress.  Certainly, there was the pain of recognizing the disharmony of the relationship between her parents, accompanied by the detailed revelations of her father’s infidelity.  It certainly can not be imagined, not by me, about the levels of trauma that she is experiencing upon hearing all of this, while trying to come to terms with how her family situation has changed forever.

Yet, back to the question:  are men stupid?  I guess that is too broad of a label to apply to each and every man on Earth.  It does seem to be something of an unfortunate fact that an extra level of control must be exerted for many men to remain faithful to their lovers, married, or otherwise.  It seems to stand out, in this case, due to Elizabeth Edwards having been in a situation of death, while her husband was unable to remain faithful to her due to some need to fulfill sexual wiles.
