I had been waiting for months to see this film, and I will say that I was pleased with the results!  I have been a fan of this line of comics since childhood, and I have seen all of the related films.  This recent release indeed was pleasing to me, and seemingly to the rest of the audience.

There had been much hype about The Avengers for the past few months, as interviews with stars, updated trailers, and online sneak peeks were everywhere.  Yet, none of that equalled to the excellence of the film that premiered this week.  The story begins in outer space, as dark forces are preparing to attack Earth.  Yet, on our planet, S.H.I.E.L.D. is collecting details about the approaching enemies, while preparing to build a battle force that can defeat them.

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) has arrived to assess what is happening.  He learns of this possibly devastating energy source that is threatening the planet.  Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents see that a portal has opened in outer space that is near to Earth, and something comes out of it.  Additional views show that is the demonic villain, Loki (Tom Hiddleson)!

Loki enters Earth, and he begins killing agents within the S.H.I.E.L.D. compound.  He proceeds to make some of the agents his servant drones, then he catches Nick Fury, who is trying to capture a power cube.  Fury is shot, while Loki and his associates try to escape.  Yet, the wormhole through which Loki and his allies entered collapsed,so he remains on Earth, prepared to create havoc!

Nick Fury declares a level 7 emergency, and that the world now is at war.  He proceeds to gather forces that can defeat Loki and his allies.  First, Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), is sought.  Getting hold of her includes breaking her out of a Russian jail in which she is imprisoned!

Next, Black Widow proceeds to an Italian village, where she locates Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo).  She tells Banner about a situation involving gamma radiation, and how they need the help of The Hulk.  Bruce is hesitant to cooperate, as he is against the use of his monstous green side!

Fury proceeds to brief the team about how Loki has plans to attack the planet.  He tells them that he means to organize an immediate response team, The Avengers.  Fury then heads to get Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who is in the middle of skills training. He briefs Rogers on the situation, telling him about the actions of Loki.

Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) is in the midst of testing and detonating mines.  He is working with his friend and assistant, Pepper Potts (Gwenyth Paltow), as they are in the new Stark Industries Building.  S.H.I.E.L.D. agents arrive to tell Stark about the current situation with Loki, and about the efforts to initiate The Avengers.  As Pepper transfers the details to Tony, he is surprised to learn of Loki’s horrific plans!

Now, Steve Rogers has gathered with Tony Stark and the others.  They head back to get Bruce Banner, while discussing their plans on how to get him to join The Avengers.  Meanwhile, Loki has a secret location where his collecting his plans for his next attack!  So, the team, with Banner now a part, head onto a battleship that has submarine transformation and invisibility capabilities!

The Avengers team now has located Loki, who has scurried to Germany.  There, an evening party is occurring, and Loki is about to attack a nearby building.  Thor proceeds to engage Loki, with Captain America (a.ka. Steve Rogers) and Iron Man (a.k.a. Tony Stark) behind him.  Loki and Thor fight, as they proceed to argue about their past history.  Iron Man pulls Thor away from Loki, but they begin fighting due to Thor’s situation of rage.  Captain America has to put a stop to their in-fighting!

Loki ends up in a prison-laboratory, held by Nick Fury.  The Avengers are preparing for an oncoming battle, as new attack forces are prepped to engage them.  Iron Man is aware of a power that Loki has to empower new enemies, so Bruce Banner and Tony Stark make efforts to get hold of his deadly weapon, a power cube called The Tesseract.  Yet, information about this cube leads Stark to distrust Nick Fury because Fury knows more about the cube than he admits.

Banner, Rogers, and Stark proceed after the cube.  As Thor has details about Loki, Fury encourages him to communicate with the super villain.  Loki is imprisoned, and it is  Black Widow who goes to his cell to speak to him.  As she talks to Loki, he tries luring Black Widow into revealing The Avengers’ plans.  Yet, she finds out that Loki intends to have Bruce Banner release his inner Hulk to attack The Avengers!

Tony Stark and Steve Rogers review further details, and they see that Loki has further plans to destroy Thor, with the rest of the planet in the process.  Extended discussion leads The Avengers to begin quarrelling among themselves.  They disagree on how to battle Loki, as well as what to do about The Tesseract.  This is a cosmic cube of dynamic capability that has the power to warp space-time, as well as to destroy Earth!  Loki has bartered with an alien conquerer who wants The Tesseract from him in order to move in for a plan to destroy Earth!

An act of villainy by Loki leads The Avengers to reunite.  Captain America and Iron Man lead a plan, where they recognize that Loki means to open a portal over Manhattan which will release an alien-enemy force.  The Avengers gather, then the head to New York City to prepare for an oncoming mega-battle!

Citizens of New York City are evacuated in preparation for the oncoming alien attack.  The invaders, called The Chitauri, enter through a wormhole above Manhattan.  Captain America, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Iron Man work to get the citizens to safety.  Bruce Banner enrages himself to transform into The Hulk, so that he can attack Loki.  Black Widow enters the wormhole, where she finds that the power of Loki’s magical staff can close the portal, blocking the entrance from alien invaders!

Nick Fury had made plans to close the portal, already.  Fury intended to launch a nuclear missile onto Manhattan, destroying any oncoming invaders, while not seeming to be concerned of the consequences of murdering millions of humans.  He does launch the missile, yet Iron Man is able to reach it in time to stop it from detonating.  Iron Man instead aims the missile at the portal, where it heads to the oncoming alien fleet!

Iron Man falls back toward the grounds of Manhattan.  Hulk is able to catch him, and all seems to be calm.  Thor returns Loki to Asgard, and The Avengers power down until needed again!  Later scenes show that Thanos is making plans to attack the planet!

Johnny Depp returns to the big screen next week, premiering as the vampire Barnabas Collins in the horror-comedy Dark Shadows!  That same day has the release of Girl In Progress, featuring Eva Mendes.  More of May includes the adventure of Battleship, the comedy of The Dictator, the fantastic fantasy of Men In Black III, and the drama of What to Expect When You’re Expecting!
