Kepler Keeps A Look-Out For Life!
It usually is an exciting thing for science semi-geeks like myself to catch some of the latest postings about recent discoveries, especially when they concern astronomy! A current clip probably delivers details of information that has been presented previously, yet now is making it into the realm of general reading. I am reading it as I am typing (yes… multi-talent….), and I am seeing where N.A.S.A. scientists have been working with The Kepler Space Telescope, recently. Their efforts have resulted in the location of three extrasolar planets that have the possibilities for habitability!
The Kepler Telescope has had it’s powerful lenses aimed in the direction of Kepler-62. This star is is located within our Milky Way Galaxy, specifically within Lyra Constellation. This is one of the 88 major constellations that are detailed by The International Astronomical Union. The star Kepler-62 is attracting specific attention because it has three worlds orbiting it which have the potentials to be habitable!
Current observations of Kepler-62 are revealing that the star hosts at least five worlds. Three of these planets are specifically interesting because they seem to orbit within the habitable zone of their parent star. Kepler-62e and Kepler-62f are the planets of this system that have been receiving the most review. It is Kepler-62f which ig attracting additional attention because it seems to be the planet within this system that has the greatest potential to be a life-harboring world! It is well-within the habitable zone of Kepler-62, and it has a possibility to hold liquid water. Additionally, Kepler 69-c has been identified within this orbital area, yet it may reside slightly outside of the habitable zone of the Kepler-62 solar system.
It is Kepler-62f which is believed to be roughly forty percent as large as Earth. N.A.S.A. Ames Research Center Principal Scientific Investigator William Borucki has stated that Kepler-62f may be a rocky world that could have polar ice caps! Yet, it is less massive and less aquatic than Earth.
The star itself is a K-type main-sequence star. This can be called an orange dwarf, also. It is similar to nearby stars within our Milky Way Galaxy that include Epsilon Eridani and Tau Ceti. These types of stars are cooler than The Sun, which is a G-type main-sequence star.
The Kepler Space Telescope has been working tirelessly since it’s 2009 launch into Earth orbit. Since that time, this celestial observer has located over one-hundred extrasolar planets! Kepler is an intregal part of the N.A.S.A. objective to locate a world beyond our solar system that is capable of hosting life, possibly even life as we understand it, and, with the greatest of fingers crossed, sentient life!

Supermassive Black Hole Caught Snacking!
Once again, it is after “bedtime”, yet I am finding myself spaced out! A recent article posted at space.com presented details regarding a fascinating site that has been observed, telescopically. It seems that astronomers in Europe have gotten to see a rare sight that initiates interest, while creating further levels of curiousity about all within the great beyond!
Astronomers working at Observatory of Geneva, at Canton of Geneva, Switzerland. and within the municipality of Versoix, Switzerland, recently have viewed another of the awesome activities occurring within deep space. Their telescopes were aimed at the distant galaxy NGC 4845, where newly discovered locations and celestial objects were being observed. This particular galaxy is a current standout in recent studies of space because of an unusual activity occurring at it’s core.
The supermassive black hole at the center of NGC 4845 seems to have gotten hold of an object that unfortunately drifted too closely to it! Apparently, a rogue planet, or it may have been a brown dwarf, was loose from the gravitational connections of any solar system, or nearby worlds. It was a floater, and it was unfortunate to have drifted into a realm of no-return!
This gas giant drifted out of it’s original area of placement, moving toward the core of NGC 4845. At that point, the supermassive black hole at the galaxy’s core was able to get hold of the world adrift with it’s intense gravitational force. Now, it seems that the black hole is sucking off of the gas giant, which will continue until the planet is reduced to nothing!
Scientists are saying that this is the first time that such an event has been viewed. This victimized object is believed to be a lost gas giant, yet it may be a brown dwarf. Whatever it is/was, allegedly had a mass that equalled to 0.5 times the mass of Jupiter. However massive it was, it is GONE now!
Supermassive black holes are objects which emit the most powerful forces of gravity known! They are the largest kinds of black holes in the universe, being as massive as hundreds of times to thousands of times the mass of The Sun. They are located at the centers of all galaxies. Our Milky Way has it’s own supermassive black hole, called Sagittarius A*. It may have been getting it’s snack on recently, as astronomers were observing flare bursts from it’s core at the end of 2012!

Facing the Facts!
…but for the STUPIDITY of sheep! Actually, this is quite funny! Not being an overly religious zealot, or one too eager to believe any and everything that I hear, I am completely amused at some current clips regarding the irrational and illogical ideas of some United States citizens. It is funny, yet ultimately, it can be disturbing and distressing.
These details actually were released at the start of last week. As I am watching / listening to Bill Maher in the background, I chose to view The Internet for some of the current political jargon and conspiracy theories that are going back and forth. I found myself stopped when I opened one link, where details regarding U.S. opinions could be found.
The Guardian, an online news presentation out of The United Kingdom, presented an Internet article this past Tuesday. It gave details regarding a survey taken by Public Policy Polling. This is an U.S. survey system which regularly conducts inquiries and studies of U.S. public opinions. Some of their latest popular inquiries probe the thoughts of citizens regarding political views, specifically concerning ideas on opinions about popular candidates. However, one of the polls strayed from current politics altogether, as it presented details on U.S. thoughts about conspiracy theories!
After what I read, I was highly amused, then surprisingly agitated. Surely, people out there are not that silly, not that stupid! Several of the questions asked for the survey were about political issues, yet others turned toward it’s interrogations of participants on their ideas about topics that included Bigfoot, crack-cocaine, media-connected mind control, September 11, 2011, and even unidentified flying objects. It was amazing, stunning, and even scary to read the results of these polls!
Well, one poll conducted was about the belief in extraterrestrials. The results of that survey showed that 29% of people questioned do believe that extraterrestrial life exists. Perhaps that is a somewhat small figure, yet I suppose it is nearly accurate for one random poll. I do think that is a small number, being one that does believe that such a topic is factual, but I do realize that so many others are against the idea until actually obvious proof is presented. For whatever reason, so many people refuse to believe, are uncapable of recognizing, that the universe is vast, and it would be senseless for our planet to be the only planet harboring life. Surely they are out there, they just may be a long, long way away!
Also, there remain conspiracy theories about the 1963-1972 Apollo Program. Several rumors and related conversations can be heard, regarding ideas that The Apollo moon landings never occurred. There are several claims that the entire effort at trips to and from The Moon by N.A.S.A. was a hoax! Chatter is spread, including statements like there are no stars seen in the moon landing photos, the actual photos would have melted because of radioactive heat at the surface of the moon, and faked photographs because of too many alleged light sources at the lunar landing site.
Topics about the national government were presented into polls. The assassination of John F. Kennedy was a topic, where 51% of persons polled feel that a greater conspiracy was at play surrounding the murder of The 35th President. As I was not around at the time of the event, I go off of what I have heard and read, which has lead to a personal belief that more happened than what has been told to the general public. There seems to be too much information regarding several gunshots having gone off, not just the single shot that allegedly was behind President Kennedy’s murder.
Our Planet Earth is getting warmer, and that is a FACT! Yet, according to this poll, there is a 37% level of people questioned who think that global warming is a joke! Another 12% of people questioned could not say one way or another about the legitimacy of global warming. However, 51% of people polled do realize that global warming is NOT a hoax, nor is it some conspiracy theory!
A disturbing announcement was that this poll is revealing that nearly one out of four U.S. citizens believes that President Obama is The Antichrist! I nearly choked while chuckling, before trying to realize that there is a large number of religious zealots out there. Added to that thought, so many people still want to put The President in some level of light to degrade him, despite the work he has been doing to assist and to stabilize our nation, even getting our soldiers out of Afghanistan and Iraq! Additionally, President Obama has done surprisingly GOOD things for this nation, including working to create policies for the regulations of carbon monoxide emissions, working to save U.S. banks before any financial collapses, removing restrictions on stem cell research, working to positively revise Medicare, closing Guantanamo Bay, and signing the $789 billion economic stimulus package-plan (The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009).
I suppose it is not unusual that such actions like the consistent dissemination of falsified facts occur regularly. It is likely a part of our culture, of human nature, to have a need to fabricate information, to elaborate upon fantasies, according to some need for keeping ourselves excited and enthused about the surrounding world. The particular details that were provided by The Guardian merely display the nature of how various segments of society go about recognizing reality, and interpreting information that often is presented through media sources, along with public conversational interaction.

Quelling Questions About Quasars!
I am in the midst of one of my nerd sessions, currently studying information about quasars. Actually, I am watching an episode of The Universe on H2. This show is providing information about distant stars, how they are being discovered, details about their behavior, et cetera. One part of the show elaborated upon details of quasars, including their behavior, how they are identified, and even the nearest one to Earth. I was curious, so I had to look up additional details regarding the closest quasar.
Information on The Internet revealed that the first quasar that was recognized is 3C 273. It is situated within Virgo Constellation, roughly 2.4 billion light years away from Earth! 3C 273 is supposed to be one of the brightest known quasars at this time, with an absolute magnitude of -26.7! If this quasar was at a distance of thirty light years from Earth, it would be as bright as The Sun!
3C 273 ejects an energy beam of light from it’s core. This beam, referred to as a visible jet, is roughly 200,000 light years long! The beam is released from 3C 273, as this quasar is one of the objects currently recognized by astronomy studies as one of the most distant objects within the observable universe.
Quasar is the shortened version for the actual name of these celestial phenomena; quasi-stellar radio source. These are radio-detected signals from regions of recent supernovae, or from distant areas where stars are being formed. It is believed that quasars actually are the central regions of the most distant galaxies that can be detected.
Apparently, not all quasars emit radio waves. That detail likely is confusing, due to the actual name of the quasar. However, those that do produce radio emissions called synchotron radiation. The actual quasars are situated closely within magnetic from which these radio waves are released.
As quasars are recognized to be within the most distantly observable galaxies, their observation is a trip backward through spacetime. The nearest observable quasar to Earth is PKS 2349-014. It is estimated to be located at a distance of 1,500 million light years from our world. This quasar has two thin streams of stellar material, wisps, that surround it. PSK 2349-014 is situated within the core of a distant, elliptical galaxy.
Some studies reveal that PKS 2349-014 interacts with a companion galaxy, likely set to merge with this galaxy at a future point. The nearby galaxy currently is estimated to be at a distance of three kiloparsecs from the core of PKS 2349-014. These wisps are covered by a nebulous region, which appears to cover the entire quasar.
Interesting! I find the studies of the cosmos, and all that is being learned about the universe beyond our Earth, to be completely fascinating! Quasars are another intriguing aspect to the ever-intriguing universe of which we are slowly learning more and more about. Indeed, it was August 5, 1962 when the first quasar was identified by British astronomer Cyril Hazard while working with The University of Sydney.

Truly In The Clouds Here!
What a treat! I will be honest, in that I am not certain that I can give an accurate description of all that I saw in an adequate blog entry. Yet, I will do my best effort at putting forth a recollection of what I found to be an amazing cinematic experience!
The film Cloud Atlas follows the stories of characters throughout different versions of themselves over extended periods of time. A boat leaving New Zealand during the 1800’s is sailing to The Americas, carrying refugees. Dr. Henry Goose (Tom Hanks) is aboard the ship, and he is poisoning one of the refugees called Autua (David Gyasi) who has been working to keep the ship together. Yet, a monstrous storm strikes, and as the ship nearly sinks, Autua saves Dr. Goose from drowning. This forever changes the doctor’s racist views of the New Zealand refugees.
Robert Frobisher (Ben Whishaw) was a musical composer during the 1930’s. His musical works involved assisting with the compositions of fellow artist Vyvyan Ayrs (Jim Broadbent). He goes onto compose his masterpiece, The Cloud Atlas Sextet, during which he flees his home. Yet, Frobisher has left with a female who does not love him as he loves her, so he completes The Sextet, he mails it to his pal, Rufus Sixsmith (James D’ Arcy), then he kills himself!
At the end of the 20th century, a writer named Luisa Rey (Halle Berry) meets an aged physicist named Rufus Sixsmith. She has learned that a nuclear power company is planning to gain control of a nuclear reactor. It’s activation will make it immediately unstable. Rey knows that if Sixsmith releases a report about the reactor, it will have the possibility to save lives. She winds up meeting a reporter named Isaac Sachs (Tom Hanks), who means to assist her.
Rey and Sachs suddenly are sidelined when the company C.E.O. Albert Grimaldi (Hugh Grant) gets wind of their actions. Security agents Joe Napier (Keith David) and Bill Smoke (Hugo Weaving), are sent to catch Rey. While searching for her, they kill Sixsmith to prevent him from releasing his report, and nearly try to kill Rey! Meanwhile, scientist Sachs has fallen in love with her, but he is killed in an airplane explosion that was set up by Smoke. He gets into a death fight with Napier, then, after the reports have been read, it is Rey who is able to start the shutdown of the nuclear reactor!
A publishing company owned by a Mr. Tim Cavendish (Jim Broadbent) is being coerced into paying $500,000. Cavendish tries to earn the funds through working at a nursing home, yet he is forced to remain at the center, as he is lead to believe that it is a hotel. The center facilitator, Nurse Hoakes (Hugo Weaving) prevents Cavendish from leaving, yet Cavendish works out a plan to escape with two other trapped residents!
A Korean clone called Somni-41 (Donna Bae) was created to work at Papa’s Song fast food restaurant. She advances, becoming more aware and seeemingly sentient, so Somni-41 flees the fast food scene to enroll into college. Somni-41 learns, and she meets a male companion, Hae-Joo Im (Jim Sturgess). They explore the city, and Im admits that he is a part of the revolution that is acting against the current government. He shows Somni-41 where clones are being destroyed for their parts, and she proceeds to write a public notice on behalf of clones. This leads to Somni-41’s arrest, where she goes onto recognize that she merely has been a creation of social whim!
Lastly, Zachary (Tom Hanks) is a tribal resident of a post-apocalyptic Hawai’i. A woman with a more advanced tribe called The Prescincts asks Zachary to live with them. She is Meronym (Halle Berry), and she develops a relationship with Zachary. It is during The Prescinct ritual mountain climbing that Zachary is confronted by their embodiment of Death, Old Georgie (Hugo Weaving). Old Georgie tempts Zachary to kill Meronym, but Zachary does not kill her. The seeming outcome is that an enemy tribe attack their clan, killing or enslaving all of those who resist them. Zachary and Meronym escape the island, managing to survive for many years afterward.
The story actually was very entertaining, though it had MANY twists and turns! I likely did not get it all right, did not get it all complete, and need to see it again. I would like to see it again, as it was entertaining, and it indeed was a visually stunning film! I would recommend it to any and all sci-fi/adventure film fans, as well as those whom like possible mystery stories. Cloud Atlas indeed could fall within that realm!
The next major films come with the start of November. The first weekend of the month brings The Man With the Iron Fists, featuring Russell Crowe, Pam Grier. Lucy Liu, and RZA! That same day also has Flight and Wreck-It Ralph! More November films to anticipate include Hitchcock, Red Dawn, Rise of the Guardians, Skyfall, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2!

Look Out Mars, Here We Come!
We mean to get to Mars! We mean to conquer Mars! Mars is ours! That is the understanding! Martians, beware!
Humanity has fantasized about The Red Planet for generations, imagining it to be the home of an incredible species of beings, possibly similar to ourselves, possibly hostile to us. We have long-thought of Mars as a place that, at some point, will require our presence. Current advances in science and related research have allowed us to recognize that Mars is not a world that is currently inhabited, yet that it may have held life in it’s past. It does seem that several factions within our human community are anxious to assist Mars with a revival!
Mars One is a privately-owned project, lead by Netherlands-based businessman Bas Lansdorp. He intents to lead the mission that will be responisble for the transportation of a human subject to Planet Mars. The full goal is to have an entire human colony upon The Red Planet by the year 2023!
These plans were announced during June. Lansdorp spoke of working to set up the mission through stages. First, during 2013, four astronauts will be selected to live within a replica of a Martian environment that will be situated within a desert location. There, the astronauts will train and prepare, as if they actually were living on Mars.
Next, a communications satelllite will be created. This is to happen during 2014. It is likely to be tested, possibly to be sent into space before the astronauts are sent to Mars. The satellite will be needed for arranging the availabilities for contact between space travellers and Earth links during missions.
Then, a supply ship is to arrive at Mars during 2016. It is scheduled to land upon The Red Planet, filled with vital living supplies. This will include 2,500 kilograms of food. The mission will be expanded two years later, wen an exploration vehicle arrives to probe for the most suitable location for a human settlement to be placed!
Pressing forward into 2021, two life support units, two living units, another supply unit, and an additional rover will arrive. This all will be used to assist with the construction of a suitable living environment for human beings on Mars. Mars One will have tested these items beforehand to verify their capacity for sustaining people during long-term missions upon another world.
It will be 2022 when The SpaceX Falcon 9 Heavy rocketship launches from Earth, heading to Mars! By 2023, a landing should occur, with astronauts prepared to reside within the habitable settlement. An additional accompaniment of four astronauts will arrive during 2025.
I would have to say that the long-term goal is to colonize Mars, to terraform the planet. In all honesty, we are using/abusing Earth to the limit, and we possibly are running out of room. The likely truth is that we will need an additional world to live upon, to invade, for the ultimate purpose of human proliferation. Mars long has been the likely candidate for such a purpose, and we are ultimately reaching the point where we are able to recognize our capacity to place our imaginations into action. We will be able to travel to Mars, to terraform the planet, so that we can claim it as our own, and maybe so that we can have two worlds that can exist with human beings that are not intent upon destroying both of them!

Another World Nearby and NOT of The Sun!
A seemingly similar world has been spotted right next door! Exciting! It seems that astronomers whom have been making recent and detailed observations of the night skies have succeeded in locating what must be the nearest planet that is orbiting a star which is not The Sun. It possibly is where many would have expected it to be located, yet now there is the verification of it’s existence.
Right next door (at 4.3 light years, or 25,278,089,104,689.51 miles away), a new world has been discovered! It appears to have a likeness to our Earth, in that it is a mere amount more than the mass of our world. This makes the newly-discovered exoplanet the lightest world outside of our solar system to be identified, thus far!
La Silla Paranal Observatory at Chile is where this discovery was made. Through the use of the powerful HARPS Instrument, precise peerings into nearby regions of our Milky Way have allowed us to see more of what is sitting right next door. Alpha Centauri, the ternary stellar system which is the nearest star system to our own, hosts an Earth-like world around one of it’s stars!
The observations are preliminary, but what has been revealed is that a planet with some possible likenesses to our Earth is in orbit of Alpha Centauri B. It is not immediately akin to Earth, as it is much closer to it’s star. Floating at an average range of three million miles away from Alpha Centauri B, it is practically in the face of it’s star! This world is closer to Alpha Centauri B than Mercury is to The Sun. This world is on fire!
Currently, the planet has been designated as Alpha Centauri Bb. It’s host star, Alpha Centauri B, is a part of the three-star system, which is the closest star system to our own solar system within our Milky Way Galaxy. This system contains Alpha Centauri B, along with Alpha Centauri A, and Proxima Centauri.

This world is ON FIRE!!!
….and You Thought It Was Hot In Your Hood!
Studies of outer space continue to be so captivating because of the continuous levels of awe and inspiration that accompany every image that is captured! I was looking through some prior notes and online clips on some of the recent presentations, which took me to one of the possibly strangest planetary objects within our Milky Way Galaxy!
It was during 2008 that the talented team working with The Hubble Space Telescope identified particular stars within The Auriga Constellation. This is a grouping of stars that is visible from the northern hemisphere of our planet. Designated as M32, major stars within Auriga include Capella, Hasseleh, Hoedus 1, Hoedus 11, and Menkalinan. Capella, formally entitled Alpha Auriga, is the sixth-brightest star in the sky!
Eight of the stars within Auriga are known to have planets. WASP-12 is the major star of this constellation, which is a yellow dwarf, akin to our Sun. It’s orbiting world, WASP-12b, orbits exeptionally close to WASP-12. The distance has been calculated to be one-fortieth of the distance that separates Earth from The Sun! This lack of area is at a point that the planet’s atmosphere is sucked off by the heat of WASP-12at a level of 189 quadrillion tons, annually!
SuperWASP has been working to identify extrasolar planets in transit of their host stars since the beginning of the 21st century. It was during September of 2006 when the group located WASP-1b and WASP-2b. There is at least one uncomfirmed world, GD 66 b, which was first identified during 2008. It orbits GD 66, a white dwarf star that also is a pulsar, which is 170 light years away from us!

Hubble’s Continued and Unparalleled Images!
Following and learning about the continuing studies of space-time is always exciting! I am reading these recent releases about what The Hubble Space Telescope has been doing, specifically regarding it’s latest images of outer space. It’s latest work has to be near the top of the list of the most fascinating discoveries ever!
The Hubble Space Telescope has been taking images of the universe, peering into distances that are not readily understood by any viewer. It has been focusing on a region designated as Hubble Deep Field, which then has peered into Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (I guess…). All of this distant observation of ancient space-time equates to something nearly 80, 240, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000 miles from Earth!
The recent telescopic images of Hubble have gathered images that equate to their existence during the time of the cosmos some 13.2 billion years ago. One image is of a galaxy labeled as UDFj-39546284 (no, clever nicknames did not make the cut….). This galaxy has been imaged as it existed roughly 450 million years after The Big Bang. That is young, in terms of the cosmos, and merely five percent of the current age of the known universe. This galaxy itself supposedly no longer exists, and it has taken so many years for it’s light to be visible by our instruments!
These current pictures of the cosmos have captured images of roughly 5,500 galaxies. The Hubble Space Telescope spent roughly fifty days taking these photographs, adding them to the collection of images stored from Hubble Ultra Deep Field. This is an area of the cosmos, located within the constellation Fornax, a constellation visible from the southern hemisphere. It is situated between the constellations Cetus and Eridanus. Fornax is a part of The Fornax Cluster, a grouping of galaxies and dwarf galaxies that are roughly 500,000 light years away!

Alright. My excuse is that I was doing some evening browsing of the web, looking for various off-the-wall postings. Between checking my e-mail, reading other blogs, and semi-watching The Science Channel, I was lured into postings of this one blog, unicornbooty. Yeah; I will go from there…
I am going to go with the assumption that some of these people are actual scientific researchers. Surely, that is what lead them to a point of amazement at this recent find. I guess that they were not horny. I guess that they were not hungry. These people actually found something that is quite strange, at best!
It is a lost dick! It is not attached to a body. It comes with no testicles. The actual truth is that this thing is a snake, yet it has the abnormal appearance of resembling an amputated penis! Actual researchers likely just said to Hell with it, as they went ahead and dubbed the creature “The Penis Snake”!
It was during November 2011 when engineers working along The Madeira River of Brazil that some of them stumbled upon this quite unusual beast. It was captured, I assume, then taken to scientists for review. A biologist named Julian Tupan was among those who saw and got hold of the animal; there were six of these creatures. Tupan and the engineers collected the animals. One of them died, three were set back into the river region, and two were taken to be studied.
The examinations revealed that the animals are not reptiles, as they actually are amphibians. They look like snakes (dicks…) because of their smooth and long shapes, with wrinkles, here and there. The biologists currently believe that these animals breathe through skin pores, and it is possible that they eat insects, fish, and worms. Observations have revealed that the creature has no eyes!
You may not have immediately gone with that line of thought upon first seeing this animal. Yet, when you sit and look at it for a moment (if you must…), it does look like a greasy dick! I can not say where the minds of these engineers who found this animal were at when they came across it. Yet, it’s lack of design, it’s pinkish-brown color, it’s wrinkles, and it’s seemingly sausage-like appearance could have lead some minds to make an analagous analysis of a misplaced member! The animal has been given the scientific designation of Atretochoana eiselti.
That really was not what I was planning to encounter with my evening web browsing. I was content with listening to one of the astronomy programs from The Science Channel, broadcast through the television behind me. I was looking at online postings, as one of them relayed that scientists had discovered what could be a new animal. It was located when workers were draining a section of Brazil’s Madeira River, which is the largest tributary to the mighty Amazon River.
